Advantages of recycled cashmere

You've always wanted a cashmere scarf or sweater because you know the prestige of this material and its qualities. What you may not know is that the supply of this fine fibre is limited: each goat produces only a small amount of down per year, which is part of why the price is high.

A few years ago the fashion world started working on a way to make the fibre that already exists go further: recycled cashmere.

What recycled cashmere is

Recycling cashmere means recovering the fibre from production offcuts and old cashmere garments that already existed, and putting it through a new process to obtain cones of yarn from which new pieces can be knitted.

In this production model the fibre gets used twice: the recycled part of the yarn comes from offcuts and garments that already exist, so less new raw cashmere has to be combed, sorted and spun, and the offcuts and old garments don't end up as waste. Our recycled pieces are 100% cashmere, at least half of it recycled and blended with virgin cashmere: the yarn comes from a spinning mill in Prato, and we knit it in our family's factory.

Good practices in production

A whole series of measures go into keeping production lean: buying the yarn from spinning mills in the area, small and medium-sized companies that can supply quality yarn that is 100% Made in Italy, or limiting production to what is really needed, estimating sales on the basis of the orders received each month. A system of this kind makes it possible to manage resources better and to avoid making products that would go unsold.

The advantage isn't only for the companies or for the amount of yarn that would otherwise go unused, but also for the customer, who can count on affordable, stable prices all year round and on quality products that have just been made.

Bear in mind that recycled fibre is slightly shorter than virgin fibre, so small balls (pilling) are a little more likely to form. That isn't a flaw in the garment, but it is a good reason to follow the washing and storage instructions carefully, so it stays beautiful for longer.
